Last weekend Berlin, the home of style and culture festival, Bread & Butter by Zalando opened its doors to guests.
The first day at Bread & Butter 2017 by Zalando was launched with a bang at the B&&B Box, the hero installation at the heart of the festival. Throughout the day, guests sat back and relaxed to view live streamed Fashion Shows projected onto the B&&B Box and listened to inspiring panel talks and music performances. The interactive installation also allowed visitors to use social engagement features made available by Facebook.
In fashion, Bread & Butter presented tons of boundary-pushing style during day one. Beyond the immersive brand labs on show, an entire exhibition was dedicated to the iconic Dame Vivienne Westwood, while Topshop’s trend-filled fashion show started off a weekend of exclusive catwalk presentations. Attendees were also treated to a stellar runway show courtesy of Zalando, where Julia Restoin Roitfeld, Veronika Heilbrunner, Sang Woo Kim, Del Keens, Lena Meyer-Landrut, Lary, Haityti, Noah Becker, Marc Goehring and Tim Labenda sat front row to view the AW17 styles as they hit the floor. This season was all about emphasising diverse characters and inspiring stylistic freedom. Model of the moment Adwoa Aboah opened the show joined by a crew of iconic faces from Berlin, who ruled the runway.
Guests were treated to a wide spectrum of genres and pulsating beats across Bread & Butter today, with DJ sets from Berlin’s coolest collectives like STAYCORE and BASS GANG. International superstar, M.I.A. slayed the B&&B stage with her headline performance that had crowds going wild. The showcase was set against Europe’s most advanced technical set up with an interactive motion sensor LED screen, creating a mind blowing showcase.
For the culturally curious, the opening day at Bread & Butter has been an utter field day. We’ve had deeply personal talks from icons like Wyclef Jean who wrapped up his music journey with an impromptu live performance, followed by pro-styling tips during Topshop’s talk. Undoubtedly one of the main highlights was Dame Vivienne Westwood’s ‘Get a Life’ discussion, where the legend spoke about the importance of art and literature while forging a path of inventiveness. It was a rare glimpse into the process and practice of one of the most prolific designers of our time.
Day two welcomed a whole host of diverse style offerings across the festival, from buzzing brand labs to inspiring street style. Today it was all about the guys, with TOPMAN presenting a slick fashion show with a crisp, cool AW17 collection that spoke to the modern man. HUGO presented its latest offering in a dynamic showcase with parkour jumpers and a specially composed soundtrack creating a unique fashion show concept. Selected stayed true to its Nordic DNA to stage a show inspired by city lines, modern shapes and minimalist expression.
FKA twigs presented by Mercedes-Benz took to the B&&B stage tonight with a truly sublime performance. The avant-pop songstress proved herself to be a definitive and unique musician of our generation as she delivered fearless moves alongside a string of her most beautiful hits. Austrian rap sensation Yung Hurn brought his trippy tunes and devilish demeanour to the stage, also AKITO, Rushmore and Ase Manual also rocked the festival’s second day. The night culminated in the energy-filled The Vogue Ball presented by Come Extra Fly, where we saw some of the most fabulous voguing and incredible looks ever seen in Germany
Adwoa Aboah, the model and founder of GURLS TALK brought her platform to B&&B for an open discussion with Dr. Lauren and Maxim Magnus, a London-based transgender lifestyle blogger and model. The empowering discussion touched on everything from body positivity, to what feminism means today, and the importance of selflove, led by i-D Germany’s Editor-in-Chief, Alexandra Bondi de Antoni. Hype founder Liam Green talked about his brand’s staggering success story on how it became one of the UK’s hottest streetwear labels of today. TOPMAN hosted an exciting panel discussion with insights from Creative Director Gordon Richardson alongside poet Max Wallis, whose exploration of love, youth and masculinity portrays TOPMAN's catwalk attitudes.
The high energy atmosphere continued into the final day at Bread & Butter by Zalando. Dutch design duo Viktor&Rolf brought their first Haute Couture show outside of Paris to Berlin and a power-pop performance from Bilderbuch set the B&&B stage alight. German rapper RIN got the audience bouncing to tunes from his newly dropped album and we listened in on panel talks with Highsnobiety’s David Fischer and Viktor&Rolf’s conscious design conversation.
This edition of Bread & Butter by Zalando will be one for the books, as fashion artists Viktor&Rolf's first HauteCouture show ever outside of Paris took place today at B&&B. The Dutch design duo left the public astonished with meticulously crafted pieces masterminded through conscious design; featuring select looks from their three most recent collections: "Action Dolls, Haute Couture Autumn/Winter 2017, "Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Spring/Summer 2016" and “Vagabonds, Autumn/Winter 2016". Napapijri took B&&B visitors on a digital multisensory journey. The experience included a revamp of Vivaldi’s world-famous The Four Seasons, performed live by four urban artists: Sharon Doorson, Jan Blomqvist, TOKiMONSTA and Raleigh Ritchie.
The audience went wild tonight for Bilderbuch’s infectious pop-funk tunes, where they set the tone with their spacey sounds and impeccable sense of style. Berlin based DJ Ticklish brought his R&B infused Jungle Juke sets to the stage and Hannah Faith showed off her superb selector skills in an eclectic set. Last to join the party was Virgil Abloh, who embodied a new format for DJing with his mission statement spreading club culture across the globe into contemporary culture.
Highsnobiety founder, David Fischer, talked today about digital disruption and the emerging importance of multiplatform storytelling to a young millennial and GEN Z global audience. Viktor&Rolf left the crowd inspired by a topical conversation about conscious design and announced an exciting upcoming collaboration with Zalando - expected to be released early next year. The partnership with Zalando will be a playful merger of Viktor&Rolf's couture sensibility and sustainable fashion.
